Our Story

I didn't plan on starting a matcha brand. I dropped out of uni, travelled for a while, and somewhere along the way got completely hooked on matcha, the good stuff, not the bitter, chalky version most people's first cup turns out to be.

That sent me to Japan, tasting matcha from farm to farm, trying to understand what actually makes a good cup. Okumidori, grown in Mie prefecture, was the one I kept coming back to, smooth, naturally sweet, and completely different from anything I'd had before.

Maddie's started as a way to bring that back home. First the matcha, then the café at Gunwharf Quays, built around the same idea, take the time to do it properly, keep it calm, keep it honest. Monty, my golden retriever, supervises most of it from behind the counter.

Every tin we sell is the matcha I'd choose myself. That's really the whole philosophy.
